Valheim 1.0 Deep North: Get Your Server Ready Before Sept 9
Valheim goes 1.0 on September 9. Deep North is the final biome โ the game's been in Early Access for three years building to this. Before you and your crew log in on launch night, there's one question to settle: keep your world, or start fresh?
This article covers what Deep North adds, how world generation affects your options, and the steps to prepare your dedicated server before the patch drops.
What Deep North actually adds

Deep North is Valheim's end-game biome. It brings extreme cold, new enemy types, a new crafting tier above Mistlands gear, and the content Iron Gate has been building toward since launch.
This is a cap to the progression arc, not a mid-game addition. Players who haven't cleared Mistlands yet have a significant amount of content between them and Deep North. For a full breakdown, see the official Valheim 1.0 patch notes.
The world seed question: will Deep North generate in your existing world?
Valheim generates new biomes in unexplored chunks only. Your world's seed determined the biome layout at creation โ Deep North was always planned to appear somewhere on your map. What 1.0 does is activate it.
If your group has explored the edges of your world, you may have already generated terrain where Deep North was supposed to appear. In that case, the biome either generates in a narrow remaining ring or not at all, depending on your seed. If your map edges are still dark (unexplored), Deep North will appear there normally when you travel that direction after the update.
There is no reliable way to predict how much of your edge is already generated without loading the world and checking the map. The safest assumption: the more exploration your group has done, the less room Deep North has to generate.
Keep or reset: the honest answer
If your group is mid-progression with a built-up base and unexplored map edges, keep the world. Deep North will generate and you'll reach it through normal play.
If your group has completed a full run, explored most of the map, or wants a clean start with 1.0 as the baseline, reset. A fresh world seeds with Deep North intact and the full progression arc available.
For the average friend group on a dedicated server โ mid-game, base established, not fully explored โ keep the world. A reset is disruptive and unnecessary unless the map edge is genuinely exhausted.
Back up before the patch, no matter what you decide
Take a backup before the September 9 update lands. This is a 30-second step and gives you a rollback point whether you're keeping the world or starting fresh.
In the Noogservers panel, go to your server's detail page and hit Backup. The panel saves your current world state. If the update causes any issues โ corrupted save, unexpected bug, anything โ you restore from the backup and wait for a hotfix. Do this before the patch, not after.
Updating the server: timing and order
Update your server after your players have updated their clients โ not before. Valheim enforces version matching. If your server updates first and a player tries to join on the old version, they get a connection error.
The safe order:
Step 1 โ Confirm your group is ready
Make sure everyone in your group has updated their client before you update the server. Check the version number shown in the Valheim main menu bottom-left corner.
Step 2 โ Back up
As covered above. Do this first.
Step 3 โ Update the server
From the Noogservers panel, use the Update button on your server. The panel pulls the latest version from Steam's dedicated server depot and restarts the server. The process typically takes under two minutes.
Step 4 โ Verify
After the update completes, check the server log or the panel's version display to confirm the server is running the 1.0 build. Then have one player attempt a connection before the rest of the group logs in.
What to tell your friends before launch night
Coordinate before September 9 so launch night doesn't start with troubleshooting.
Checklist to share with your group:
- Update your client before trying to join after the patch.
- Agree on keep or reset now, not when half the group is already online.
- We're backing up the server before the patch. The world is safe either way.
- Set a start time. The first session into Deep North is worth doing together.
A scheduled server restart at 3 AM on September 9 (after the patch window) means the server comes up on 1.0 cleanly and your group connects fresh.
